IC InformationCanon: Project SEKAI
Character: Hatsune Miku (Nightcord at 25:00 Variant)
Canon point: Post the Nightcord at 25:00 event
Saying Goodbye to My Persona, pre third anniversary.
Canon intensity: While Project SEKAI is definitely a game aimed at teens that dances around the topics of things such as death, it's also kind of brutal about the various forms of trauma and abuse many of the characters go through. This variant of Miku, in particular, is connected to a group of human teens who run the gamut from gender identity and fitting in struggles, to a savior and guilt complex a parent unwittingly stoked in you, to deep insecurities regarding failing to live up to talented parents who don't give you the support you need, to outright suicidal ideation and intense, graphic (emotional) parental abuse. While they dance around a lot of it (instead of "I want to die," it's always "I want to disappear,") those themes do exist and are core parts of the Nightcord at 25:00 story.
World information: Essentially modern Tokyo, though with the existence of "SEKAI," which only the people who have access to know about. SEKAI is basically a world formed from the heart of someone who needs it, where variants of the VIRTUAL SINGERS you may know as Vocaloids can reside. And yes, the real Vocaloid Hatsune Miku also exists in this world alongside her cyberfantasy counterparts. Miku contains multitudes.
Character biofacts: Miku is Teenager, though her exact age isn't concrete beyond that. Given her role as the Miku assigned to Mafuyu Asahina's Empty SEKAI, she can probably skew younger or older depending on what Mafuyu feels she needs for support in that moment. That said, she is never older or younger than Teenager. She probably would call herself sixteen, if you were to ask.
She is a VIRTUAL SINGER, capable of tangible physical existence only within the SEKAI.
She sounds like Hatsune Miku, VOCALOID robofry and all.
About the character: History: Hatsune Miku is a VOCALOID within the world of Project Sekai; a vocal synth people can use in producing music. She is also, simultaneously, a supernatural force with many 'aspects' that seem to manifest for those with a spark of creativity that could set the world on fire (in a good way). This specific Miku, formed with and of the Empty SEKAI that bloomed for Mafuyu Asahina, is roughly a year old in terms of 'lived experience.' She spent much of her early 'life' alone except for Mafuyu, before she managed to reach out to the rest of Nightcord at 25:00 and pull them into her SEKAI. Since the introduction of new humans to the Empty SEKAI, more VIRTUAL SINGERS have appeared within it; first Rin, then Meiko, then Luka, then Len, and finally Kaito. Kaito is not only the final addition but a fairly recent one. While Miku tries to be close to all of her fellow VIRTUAL SINGERS, their natures don't always make it easy.
Personality: While she is a very warm and open person, Miku can come across as fairly reserved; due to her nature as essentially a reflection of Mafuyu Asahina, as well as (more subtly) the other members of Nightcord at 25:00 who have access to her SEKAI. For a specific example, her inherent purpose of 'saving Mafuyu' alongside Kanade Yoisaki's savior complex have created in her a deep need to be useful and save everyone in front of her. Due to her own limited experience outside of her fellow Empty SEKAI VIRTUAL SINGERS or the members of Nightcord at 25:00, it's not really until interacting with others who are new to her that this (among other traits, such as self-doubt, anxiety, or resentment) might be expressed.
There's an innocence to Miku, due to how short her existence has been thus far and the nature of how inherently sheltered she is; simple activities and sights will be new to her and be treasured. Conversely, there's also a jadedness to her that isn't really bitter or loud; being connected to the humans she's connected to, she knows well the darkness that's out there, both in the psyche and in the world. Being who and what she is, though--the sound of the future, made to sing humanity's feelings with a voice that can be used and heard by all of humanity--she chooses to believe in hope, and in the fact that things can always be better, as long as we try. She doesn't refuse to see the 'bad' in people--but she refuses to think there is such a thing as a 'bad side,' just that there are parts of ourselves that we need to work on, that can hurt both ourselves and others. And to help you work on that is what she's there for.
She's only recently come into her own as a 'person;' though she's never been unfeeling, how she reflected Mafuyu Asahina left her somewhat stiff in her emotional regulation. Even now, her affect is fairly flat, and she cannot physically emote well. Her attire and look also represent this connection: her clothes are shades of grey and creased, she's unbalanced (wearing only one sock and no shoes), and her hair is unkempt--the pigtails done up unevenly and it too has faded to grey, with only the faintest hint of turquoise remaining at the ends. The only true splash of colour on her is her nails, painted a bright turquoise that will never chip--representing the lingering hope Mafuyu clings to, that not everything in this world is ugly and without colour; that she can still be saved.
Though she's still learning to want and express wants beyond the duty she was created for--or the dreams of her humans that are reflected upon her--she's a creative and curious soul. She loves music and she loves learning and trying new things; even if those things might be dangerous. Being a VIRTUAL entity, she is unused to truly harmful situations that might hurt her, and holds a very casual disregard for her own safety. In her pursuit of knowledge, she may (and likely will) put herself into danger for answers. If she is in a group, this trait would come out even moreso--she's a protector of humans, after all, and anyone not VIRTUAL would probably count as human to her, even if she doesn't call them that aloud.
Abilities: Her songs are known to be very soothing--or invigorating, or anything in between, depending on what she's going for. It's absolutely and 100% not mind control, just a little pick me up. She would never sing with ill intent. That said, her songs can also make you deeply
sad--sadness, after all, is not necessarily a negative emotion, nor are things such as grief or loneliness. In the cases of such songs, what drives her to sing them is usually empathy, to let the recipient of the song know they are not alone.
Her hearing (and sense of sound, music ESPECIALLY) is almost unparalleled. All her other senses are the same baseline as a regular human, but she can
hear sounds; even the ones most people probably won't.
She has knowledge of every Hatsune Miku song in existence. Yes, even that one. She will sing them at request! (This also means she knows a
lot of swear words and...other things, of course.)
Due to her nature as, essentially, a therapy companion, Miku has broad but rudimentary knowledge of mental illnesses and psychological issues, as well as some very vague ideas of how to deal with them (her role is to be a friend and emotional guide to her humans, not necessarily
exactly a therapist--and her incarnating as a teenager also means she can struggle to grasp some higher technical concepts.)
As a VIRTUAL SINGER, outside of SEKAI her only way to interact with people is through interfacing with technology--usually someone's phone or desktop. In this way, she can at most summon up a hologram; she cannot physically interact with the world in this state (she cannot physically interact with the world outside of SEKAI at all). Now that she's gained a physical presence on the ship, how this interfacing would change in regards to any technology found on the ship remains to be seen...
Noteworthy items: The string she keeps wrapped around her wrist, that you can quite often spot her playing cat's cradle with...it seems normal at first, but if you were to hold one end and Miku were to walk off with the other, it would just keep going...and going...and going...
